A Modern Yo-Yo Wall Hanging

I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Quilting the New Classics by Michelle Muska. The unique approach of the book was to ask twenty quilters to make quilts using ten of the most well-known and much loved quilt blocks: Double Wedding Ring Crazy Quilt Dresden Plate Bear Paw Log Cabin Nine-Patch Hexagon Yo-Yo Flying Geese Rail Fence Ten quilters designed a quilt that reflected the traditional use of the block assigned to them. Another ten took the same block ...

Button Sampler Mini Quilt

I recently reviewed a wonderful book called 120 Original Embroidery Designs by Yoko Saito for the CT website.  I am an admirer of Yoko Saito’s prolific work, especially her skillful use of Japanese taupe fabrics, and own several of her books. I was especially drawn to this one because of the way she combines creative fabric selection, patchwork, appliqué, and embroidery. You can read my book ...

A Mini Twister Mini Quilt

If you are a regular follower here on Notions, CT‘s staff blog, you may remember that I have a history of starting more projects than I finish, love to try new tools, and tend to make scrappy quilts to help justify the size of my fabric stash (25+ years worth). Recently at least, I tend to embark upon smaller quilted projects with the hope I will complete ...

Color Theory and Quilting Inspiration

In my opinion, one of the truest ways to explore color theory for quilts is within the surroundings of nature. When I look closely, I see all kinds of imaginative colors! Living in the Pacific Northwest, we are lucky to have frequent beautiful rainbows after a rain shower. One of my other favorite places to explore color theory is with the website, Design Seeds. It’s such an amazing place to find color inspiration! You can explore and find photos starting with just one color that strikes your ...

Tiny Bubbles Dress in Mammoth Flannels

Hi, I'm Holly! I work at Connecting Threads' sister company Knit Picks. Thought I mostly knit these days, I've been sewing since I was 6. My grandmother was a garment worker and there was nothing I loved more than to sit at the sewing machine with her and sew my own clothes. I now have two young daughters (ages 1 and 2-busy times!), and I love sewing clothing for them even more than for myself. So when Connecting Threads started carrying gorgeous Mammoth Flannels, I knew I wanted to make my older daughter, Penny, an Oliver & S Bubble Dress. I just got finished sewing it. What do you think? Made in Striped Tweed Flannel (color: Flame, item number: 7683), I think it turned out so soft and cozy.
