Into The Woods – FREE PATTERN
8.9.2024

Hi everyone, Liz here! I get the absolute pleasure of introducing you to my latest project, a true labor of love between Connecting Threads and Crochet.com, one of our 4 sister brands! Fabric and crochet… did I peak your interest?

(And before you get mad that you have to read an entire blog post to get to the free pattern, I got you: Click here to go directly to the pattern download page!)

Crochet.com has launched their latest pattern book: Hooked on Quilting by While They Dream. A series of 5 crochet patterns that were heavily influenced by quilting designs, this book is a dreamy collection of blankets that range from beginner-friendly to intermediate. I couldn’t resist a collab with our friends over at Crochet.com, so I took 3 of their patterns and translated them into fabric designs!

First up is Into The Woods!

A beginner-friendly Tunisian crochet pattern by While They Dream, she drew inspiration from birch trees, cold winter mornings and song birds. This design makes for a perfect transition from crochet to fabric, a simple column-based arrangement that makes stitching of any kind a breeze. A huge thank you to the talented While They Dream for allowing me to translate this design to fabric, it’s absolutely marvelous!

Onto the fun part for us quilters: How did I turn this design into a quilt pattern? And where can you download the FREE pattern?

Let’s chat a bit about this design:

Just like the crochet pattern, I built out the quilt pattern using a column-based system. By keeping them all a standard width, it allowed me to play with placement of the Quartz Metallic panels (the small rectangular pops of color) until I was happy with their size and positioning.

The pattern is written to follow the diagram you see to the right: by labeling each column, then labeling each piece within a column, this quilt comes together quite quickly!

A very important note about this pattern: it was only designed to be one size to match the crochet blanket’s size. That said, this pattern would be VERY easily to upsize! Here are some tips:

  • Each column is 5 ½” wide, so make the entire quilt wider by adding 1″ to each column piece. For example: piece A2 is 5 ½” x 4 ½”. To make the column wider, change the 5 ½” to 6 ½”. Repeat that process for each piece!)
  • Each column is 60 ½” tall once sewn together, so to make the quilt even taller, you’ll want to add height to the #3 pieces. Here’s what I mean: if you want to add 4″ to the height of the entire quilt, start with your two A3 pieces. By adding 2″ to the length of each piece (they’d go from 20 ½” to 22 ½”), you’ll add 4″ to the total column. For B3, since there’s only one #3 piece, you’ll need to add all 4″ to that one cut (it would go from 30 ½” to 34 ½”). Repeat the process for each column, adjusting based off of how many #3 pieces are in said columns.

My last note about Into The Woods is about its unbelievable potential. When While They Dream designed this stunning blanket, she talked about birds sitting on birch trees and I tried my best to embody that feeling in the quilted version. However, I couldn’t stop dreaming up colorways using our Basics & Blenders! Here are the two I want to make next:
