Set your sights on Smooth Sailing

When I first saw Jenni’s Smooth Sailing collection, I instantly fell in love. The way she brought so much variety to a red, white and blue color scheme, and the adorable graphics really make this a gorgeous collection. I can’t get enough of the focal print and find myself dreaming of many different projects to use it with. This collection makes up some beautiful quilts, but also has many other wonderful uses.

One of the first ideas given to us was by Anita, who dreamed up the great idea to put together a quilt block and frame it. What a fun way to update your bathroom! Just look at how cute this block looks from the Sail Away pattern download by Jo-Lydia’s Attic

Basic hand towels could be updated with a little fussy cutting and applique as well, like this cute little lighthouse.

Making pillows is always a quick and easy way to update a room. Going off of Anita’s framed quilt block idea, you could also utilize a single quilt block as the face of a pillow. This would be a great way to tie in your Smooth Sailing quilts, or a smaller way to display the beautiful blocks. If you enjoy embroidery, Jenni also designed patterns for a sailor boy and a sailor girl pillow – both of which are free!

The nautical theme, as well as the patriotic color scheme of Smooth Sailing makes it a great option for use as summer party decorations. Simple ideas like cloth napkins or fat quarter fans are an easy way to add some flair to your event. For a little boy’s birthday party, using some Smooth Sailing scraps and rope (or bias binding), you could construct your own customized bunting banner.

One of our new books, Seaside Home by Suzanne Woods, has plenty of great sea-inspired projects. A very easy project from this book that could coincide with your party décor is the Fabric-Wrapped Wreath. The addition of the sea-themed embellishments is a great finishing touch.

With Father’s Day around the corner, a sewn greeting card or gift card sleeve made out of Smooth Sailing would add a nice touch to any gift and is easy enough to whip up quickly.

Looking to take your e-reader or tablet to the beach? Whistlepig Creek Productions added a bunch of different patterns that would dress up (and protect) your tablet while giving it a stylish flair with Smooth Sailing.

Most, if not all of these projects, could be enhanced with a bit of fussy-cutting and applique. Adding anchors, nautical stars, a compass rose, or making your own design, would be an easy way to bring a little bit of the sea life to these and other projects.

Is there anything that you’re itching to make with the new Smooth Sailing collection? We’d love to hear your ideas! And as always, feel free to share your project images with us on Facebook! We really enjoy seeing what our customers are working on.

Embroidering in one solid color really makes the pictures pop. I love them both!
