Fan-Tastic Place Mats

I was intrigued by these unusual, quilt-as-you-go, fan-shaped place mats in Fast & Furious Family by Gudrun Erla.

I used 10 Connecting Threads batiks, including some from the limited edition Fall & Winter 2012 Batiks Collection, to complement my Thanksgiving holiday dishes. The fabrics I selected for the wedge-shapes are:

I chose a binding fabric to pull the colors together:

The instructions were for four place mats. The nine FQs for the wedges actually make six wedges each, so I increased the yardage for the batting, backing, and binding to make six place mats. I used a fusible fleece batting I had on hand, instead of the stiffer product recommended in the book, with good results. The place mats all have the same fabrics shuffled around in a different order.

These quilt-as-you-go place mats are easy and fun to make! Their fan shape is perfect for my round kitchen table. I love the rich colors of the batiks. I am eager to use the place mats this fall and even have another set started for Christmas using Technicolor Tidings! They would make great gifts. There is a similar pattern for rectangular place mats in the same book, Fast & Furious Family, if you prefer that shape. Kathy, one of our staff, recently made a set, and blogged about it on Notions. These fast and unique place mats are Fan-Tastic fun!

What pattern is this and what ruler please

The pattern was from a book we carried in 2012 called Fast & Furious Family by Gudrun Erla. We no longer sell the book but you should be able to find it somewhere online. I don’t remember there being a special ruler – probably just a template with the pattern. They are fun to make – and quick since they are quilt-as-you go. Hope you can find the book easily.
