It’s always a great day when you get to flip through a beautiful new sewing book. It’s especially great when that sewing book was written by a blogger who you’ve followed and admired for years! In her new book, Handmade Style, Anna Graham blends modern fabrics with a variety of sewn projects to create a collection of quilts, tops, totes, and various other small projects that work impeccably well together. Best known for her beautiful bag patterns, the Noodlehead blogger has spent the past few years compiling an assortment of 23 sophisticated and cohesive projects. The end result is a guide for any confident crafter who wants to begin living a handmade lifestyle, starting with their wardrobe and home furnishings. The patterns in this book are accompanied by complete and detailed instructions and absolutely gorgeous photography.
So many people here at Connecting Threads have drooled over this book, and one of us even tried our hand at a quilt! The result was this lovely picnic plaid quilt that is featured in the “to use” section of the book. I adore how it turned out (and it only took a weekend).
Keep reading as I ask Anna a few questions about her book, personal style, and what to expect in the future at Noodlehead.
What sparked the idea for Handmade Style?
Handmade Style was an idea for quite a few years until the timing became right. I loved the thought of a collection of items to sew. I for one love sewing many different things and my hope is that readers will try something new and expand their skillset!
Did you ever predict your blog, and now book, would be so successful?
Oh, thank you. I never did intend for my blog to turn into anything really. It was a fun way to keep track of what I was making and use my love of design and photography, too. The sewing community is really so supportive and I love how much everyone shares. I’m very happy to know that there are so many wonderful creative people around the world who share their work online.
You’ve already accomplished so much in your career! Have you always known that this was the path you wanted to take?
Now you’re making me blush. 🙂 I feel really grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. There were definitely times I’ve wanted to give up though, but new opportunities always gave me a push to try new things and keep going.
Writing a book and picking which projects get to be included can be really tough! What was the process like for you when selecting patterns for Handmade Style?
Yes! That’s very true. I spend a lot of time and energy sketching and re-sketching ideas. I actually started keeping some sketches for the book projects, back in 2011. I think it was a great opportunity to take my time and think and re-think projects. That’s a catch-22 at times, but I love to take my time and sort out all the details.
You really emphasize customizing the projects in your book to fit one’s personal style. What would you say your style?
I love seeing what everyone makes! Everyone’s style is so unique and there isn’t a wrong way to express it! As for my own style, I’d say it’s gotten a little bit easier for me to define, but I’m always asking myself and paying close attention to the fabrics I select and projects I choose to make and what I’m drawn to. I’d say I love a classic, minimalist style with lots of texture and natural fibers. I definitely encourage anyone to pay attention to things they like and try different things, there’s nothing wrong with trying out a style you love, it helps you evolve your own creative choices.
What’s next for Noodlehead?
I’m very excited for the future! There are so many projects I’ve been working on and am excited about, it’s sometimes hard to pick something to focus on! I love being able to choose my own adventure and look forward to new things!
