Weigh in!

Sometimes we have issues come up where we really want to know what you, our customers, are doing, so that we can tailor our patterns to be the best they can be for your needs, or so that we can have a product selection of what you are really looking for. In general, we have a pretty good idea of our customer base, and we get lots of great feedback from our Customer Service department, but sometimes there’s just specific little things that we wonder about.

That’s a long-winded way of saying that we’re going to start putting up polls on our Quilt With Us site periodically, so that we can get these nagging questions answered. You can find them in left sidebar, and you don’t have to be a Quilt With Us member to vote (or you can vote directly here too). Lately we’ve been wondering about binding widths, and we’d sure love it if you would weigh in (here)! Feel free to comment below too, if you have more to say on the topic that doesn’t fit in a poll answer.

Thanks for your help!

I just discovered your site. Wahoo! I am in love with batik fabrics and yours are spectacular! I would like to learn how to add on bindings that could be adjustable for the length or width of a quilt or cloth runner. I am thinking of having the head and foot be wider than the side strips. What has me confused is how to manage the corners in such a case.

As to the width of bindings: it is totally dependent on the type of fabric, batting & backing. If using flannels on both top & back I prefer 3″ French fold binding. In most cases a 2 1/2 ” is perfect unless the batting is on the thin side…then go for 2″. Also, if it is for a hanging, the binding can be tighter as there will not be so much wear to it.

There was a simple kit made with the new romance line, Whisper Palette, it disappeared REALLY fast, wondering if the pattern could be posted on the kitmaker page. It was just squares on point but they created lines of colour radiating out from the centre…I hope you kow which one I mean…:o)e.g. a blue centre surrounded by yellow squares, something like that!!!

Relative to your question about bindings: We nearly always use a French binding (also called “double binding.) We cut the strips in 4″ widths and then fold to 2” before stitching on the quilts. Trimming batting and backing is then very easy and we hand-stitch the backside (generally while watching our favorite quilting TV shows.)
