Tool Review Tuesday!

It’s Tool Review Tuesday! This is where we choose a tool, do some rigorous product testing, and produce a review that gives you the nitty-gritty details needed before you add something to your cart.

Featured Tool: Wonder Tape by Dritz, part #: 21130

Connecting Threads Reviewer: Karen & Teri

wondertape

What is Wonder Tape typically used for?

Teri: It is a double-sided transparent tape that disappears after washing.

Karen:  It is a double-sided tape used to hold zippers in place and seams together before sewing.

What was your first impression of Wonder Tape?

Teri: I wasn’t sure about using it but was talked into it by a coworker who said after I used it to sew in a zipper I wouldn’t be afraid of zippers any longer.

Karen: What would I use this for? It just looks like a small roll of regular tape.

What was your experience like?

Teri: It was AMAZING! It made installing zippers a breeze. I’ve used it several times now with great success.

Karen:  Great!! I loved it. I used it to hold a zipper in place on a small bag.

How long did it take you to learn how to use it?

Teri: Not long. The tutorial that Sue did walked me right through it.

Karen: Instantly.

What did you like best?

Teri: It was easy to use and it didn’t gum up my sewing machine.

Karen:  That my zipper didn’t move when I sewed it on!! I have used this on every zipper I have sewn since.

What did you like least?

Teri: It can be a little difficult to get the other side off the tape without pulling it off the fabric.

Karen: I liked everything about it.

Why do you NEED it?

Teri: It holds the zipper in place perfectly while you sew it down. Much better than using pins.

Karen:  I need it because zippers are now fun to sew.

Who would appreciate Wonder Tape most?

It would be perfect for:

  • Beginner, intermediate, and expert quilters
  • Anyone acquiring the essential quilting/sewing tools

I have used Wonder Tape for many years and thoroughly love it. As Teri shared ” It can be a little difficult to get the other side off the tape without pulling it off the fabric” I want to share that I score the end, about 1/2″, using a pin. This helps to remove the paper, while keeping the adhesive on the fabric and/or zipper tape. The scoring is a common step for machine embroiderers using paper backed adhesive, so I just applied the same technique to Wonder Tape and have found it helpful. But I’ve used Wonder Tape so often and so long, I really don’t find it a problem to remove the paper backing and re-press any adhesive strip with my finger to press it back down on those rare occasions when it might lift.

I have used Wonder Tape for years. It helps with zippers- especially when sewing them into fleece!

I too use Wonder Tape to secure zippers when sewing. It also works for slippery fabrics or when you need to carefully align things and don’t want them to slip with sewing – such as matching print designs (think plaids, etc.), small baby or doll clothes, and sewing with Minkee.
