I had lots of colorful scraps in my stash – so many that I decided to make four rows in each spool. I wanted each spool to have fabrics of similar color – like variegated thread. You may notice there is also a rainbow pattern to my spools.
If you need to supplement your stash for a scrappy look, I would recommend a sampler of our Quilter’s Candy Color Wheel Charms.
I forgot to photograph the strip sets before I cut each spool, but here are the leftovers.
The piecing is simple, with a bit of stitch and flip for the grey spools.
Chain-piecing works great!
The top row is finished.
I made two of these mini quilt tops two years ago because they were fun and I had enough fabric in the strip sets I made. As usual, I didn’t get around to quilting them until recently. I did stitch in the ditch with clear monofilament around the spools and between each fabric in each spool. Wanting something quick and simple for the sashing and borders, I sewed straight lines a 1/4″ apart using my 1/4″ presser foot – it was less than successful. A piece of Quilter’s 1/4″ Tape placed down the center of the sashing and border helped me immensely. I sewed along each edge and the stitching was straight! I could reuse the tape a bit.
Ready to hang! Yeah!
