Spooks and Spells Inspiration
8.15.2016

Along with the other designers for Connecting Threads, I submit ideas for quilts or quilted projects for each new fabric collection we release. I had so much fun designing for Spooks and Spells by MaryJo Tuttle – the ideas just flowed! I was drawn to the color palette as seen in the sampler below…

and the individual designs – especially the witch’s hats, ghosts, and candy cornflowers – which also inspired each of their own projects!

9291 Bewitching Multi

The Magical Hats Table Topper is 28-1/2″ round. I love the way the hats spiral around with their tips meeting in the center. This effect is easily accomplished with fusible web and some machine appliqué.

9292 Spooky Guests Black

The ghosts appliquéd to the Boo! Treat Bag are adapted from the ones flying around in the fabric’s design. This bag is perfect for trick or treating!

9293 Candy Cornflowers Black

The Candy Cornflowers Table Topper, 27″ x 28″, was inspired by the adorable candy corn arranged as a flower in MaryJo’s design. Noticing the hexagon arrangement of the candy corn, I saw the potential for adapting an older design of mine to highlight the appliquéd candy cornflowers. The backing is brought forward to form binding and then the hexagons are whip stitched together on the back. It is a fun, unusual, but easy project.

I used most of the Spooks and Spells collection in the 50-3/4″ x 63-1/2″ Spooky Crossroads quilt featuring the Crossroads to Jericho block.

All of these designs are available as kits and patterns featured in the current CT catalog. I hope you enjoy making them as much as I did designing them!

Thanks Barb! I love the Candy Cornflowers fabric and enjoyed designing the table topper. The kits have sold out already and more are being made so it sounds like others liked it as well. MaryJo did a terrific job designing this collection!

Thanks Amanda! I really enjoy taking a design element from from and designing a quilted project to complement it.
