Ok, I admit that I was a little nervous about sewing with canvas. I have never sewn with anything but flannel and flat cotton, well except that one time I tried to hem my jeans… let’s just say that’s a topic best left alone. The bright cheeriness of the Fiesta canvas over took my fear so I decided to give it a try. I scoured through our patterns looking for a bag that looked fun but simple and I ran across the Modern Mary Jane Bag Pattern Download. It allowed a nice big space to showcase the canvas focal, had inside pockets, and didn’t look too hard – JACKPOT!
Pattern and fabric in hand I set off on my new sewing adventure. I decided to mix the flat cotton and canvas; I wanted to keep the squares around the center of the bag in the same print, that reads mostly solid, to keep the focus on the focal fabric. These are the fabrics I decided to use:
I didn’t use a special needle or make any changes to how I would normally sew and the canvas sewed like a dream! I actually loved how structured it was; it practically sewed itself in a perfectly straight line. Even when I was sewing all the layers together (including the handles that end up being four layers) my machine didn’t have any problems bogging down or anything. I’m already on the lookout for my next canvas project!!
The bag front is quilted but I just stiched a quarter inch inside the center square with black thread. I wanted the fabric to be the star!
