Meet Sue, Pattern Designer at Connecting Threads

I have the best job ever! Some of the others here may tell you that they have the best job, but really I do. I spend my day dreaming of fabric, quilts, and sewing projects. And I get paid to do that!!! Could it get any better? Well, yes, actually it does. I also have to look at all the new tools and books that come in. And again, I get paid to do that! Sometimes I actually sew things just to make sure that they will work, and that I’m writing the smartest, easiest way to do a technique. I love experimenting and coming up with unusual ways of making things. So I do. And you guessed it, I even get paid to do that!

I’ll take you through the process of designing here at Connecting Threads. Our amazing Fabric Designer, Jenni, creates her fabulous fabric collections.

We have a team meeting where we discuss the names for the fabric collections and projects we think would look good in the fabric. Sometimes we’ll ask for extra designs in different colors, but usually Jenni has everything covered.

Then we go back to our desks and I get to play with ideas. I draw them up on the computer. Then fill in all the fabric swatches.

I figure out my yardages, submit them, and then get down to writing the pattern.

When I’m done, the pattern goes to the sewing studio for testing. When they are done with it I make any changes needed and then that’s it. The finished project is photographed and the pattern is ready for you. By the time that happens, I’m dreaming about a completely different fabric collection and off we go again.

Not a bad job, but someone has to do it!

Hi Sue! I agree….it does sound like you have the BEST job! I always enjoy the quilts in the Connecting Threads catalog…very inspirational. It is nice to read about the person behind those patterns.
I am interested in becoming a pattern tester. I think it would be fun to make a designer’s idea come to life. In my thirty years of quilt making, I have encountered all levels of quilt patterns. Can you give me some advice on how I would go about becoming a pattern tester? Do you know who I might contact about this?

Of all the kits I have put together….the actual Connecting Threads kits are the BEST….they are very well designed with cutting instructions, great graphics & always enough fabric to comfortably sew the projects without panic, just in case you make an error. Thank you for being accurate and precise in your patterns/kits.
Now, there have been kits ordered through CT that are not actual CT kits that do not always meet your criteria so I always make certain I order only CT kits. Again, great job and thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

    Dear Sue,
I LOVE the beautiful quilt you have around your shoulders! I found the Cabin Windows quilt kit, but I wondered if the pattern is available separately?
    Many thanks.

I love your Cabin Windows Quilt but didn’t order it right away. Now it’s not even on the Connecting Threads site. Where can I get the pattern from?

    Hello Sue,
I love all of your patterns but I simply must have the pattern for the Cabin Windows quilt. I didn’t order the kit and now it is sold out. Can you tell me how or where to order it?
    Thanks,

hi Sue. Oh please, please make your cabin windows available to those of us who were skipped over this spring.
I had left my email for the kit, but was never contacted. I would really, really like to get the pattern.

I would like to purchase your pattern for the cabin window quilt, your Art Gallery Quilt, as well as Best Dishes Table Runner. Connecting Thread includes the patterns in kits and although the blue is an eye catcher, I hope to use lavendar, my grand daughter’s favorite color. My e-mail address is 2kanning@nemont.net.
    Thanks you!
Please include the purchase price so a check can be mailed.

    Sue,
You made a real winner with the Cabin Windows pattern and it seems many of us would like to see it’s return. How about selling just the pattern on the site.
    Hopeful,
    Mary

I’d also purchase the Cabin Windows quilt pattern. Some of the flannel patterns in the kit just aren’t for me, but I love the colors and pattern. Please let me know if the pattern becomes available. Thanks.
