Hello from maternity leave!
3.2.2012

Melissa here…I’m just popping in today from maternity leave to say hi to you all and to share the baby news and some photos. My little guy decided to join us a fashionable nine days late on February 1. He was 9 pounds 7 ounces and 22 inches long. No one predicted he was that huge! We’ve named him James Elliot.  And what better way to share some baby photos than with him snuggled up in a handmade swaddling blanket…

Like Katrina, I also sewed up the Swaddle Blanket from Fabric-by-Fabric One Yard Wonders using Wild Ones. I chose the blue elephant print before I knew how huge James would be–now it seems fitting, don’t you think? 😉

I didn’t have any trouble with my bias tape edging, but I’ve used the stuff before. I just ignored the book’s directions on pinning one side, sewing, then pinning and sewing the other side of the bias tape. That much pinning would give me hives, and I’d never get it done with my limited time. I just sewed both sides of the bias tape on the edge in one fell swoop without pinning at all. I like to live dangerously. Surprisingly, it came out perfect. Little James loves to be swaddled, and he is quite cozy in his new blanket. He really tried to open his eyes for these photos, but the power of the swaddle was too much for him in the end.

I love the swaddle especially how it has a tie on the front! I also have a newborn and she likes to be swaddles but will kick out of it easily.
