I jumped at the chance to sew up this cute little halter top from Fabric by Fabric – One Yard Wonders and it only took me a few moments to decide which fabric I was going to use. I chose Mariner’s Star in French Blue from my Smooth Sailing collection because I’m pretty obsessed with nautical theme.
Having a cute little halter to wear during the summer or to the beach would be so great! The pattern calls for 55/60″ fabric, which ours is not, it’s (44/45), so I just flipped the direction of the pattern pieces. When using a pattern it’s best to follow their directions and keep to the grain they specify, but because I’m a bit of a rule breaker, I just flipped it. Also because of my past history in fashion design and fit, I knew that because this was a wrap top, it wouldn’t really make too big of a difference. The pattern was pretty simple and I finished it in one afternoon. Now I just have to wait until the warm weather is upon us to be able to actually wear it!
Just a few key points:
When following a pattern, even though you cut out the size that best fits you, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be a perfect fit, so it’s good to try things on as you go and make necessary adjustments. A good fit is really key in a garment looking good on your body. Because I’m pretty petite on top (small chested, ahem ahem) and slightly narrow shoulders, I needed to take in the neck band so the top would fit better. Also for the keyhole, it was way too large of an opening for me and gaped, so I made it much smaller.
I am in love with this top and because it was so easy to make, I plan on making a few more in some other fun prints. Hmmm…. now if only I had a sailboat to sail around in while wearing this, that would be even more perfect!
