Block Party – The Modern Quilting Bee book blog tour and giveaway!
6.27.2011

This contest is now closed.  Thank you to everyone who participated!  To find out who won, click here: WINNERS.

Lucky me!  I get to blog about a really cool book, Block Party – The Modern Quilting Bee by Alissa Haight Carlton & Kristen Lejnieks.

I’m a pretty modern girl with a real attraction to both new and old.  To me, this book epitomizes just that.  The modern designs and fabrics mixed with the old traditional concept of a quilting bee.  Block Party takes you on a quilting bee journey; learning about a variety of traditional blocks and techniques in a fresh and modern way and learning about how an online community of quilters make up a modern day quilting bee.  If you’ve ever wanted to make a cool and modern quilt, this book is for you, it’s a great source of inspiration!  And if you’ve ever wanted to share your love of quilting with others, this is a great guidebook on how a bee works and how to get a bee started!  One of my favorite aspects in learning about the bee is how the designers would send off packets to the other members, giving guidelines (but not word-for-word directions) and letting each bee member use their own creativity.  The end result is a fun and unique combination of all involved.

Here’s a sneak peek of some of my favorite quilts featured.

This contest will have two lucky winners!  One person will win a copy of this wonderful book and the other person will win a Stack Sampler of one of my favorite new collections, Birchtree Lane. To enter, simply leave us a comment by 11:59 pm on July 4th telling us if you’ve ever participated in an online quilting bee.  We will pick our winners a couple days later.

Following the blog tour? Join Anna Luna of Crafty Girls Workshop tomorrow for another chance to win.

Rules: No purchase necessary.  Must have a US mailing address to enter. One entry per person.  Must provide a valid email address so that we can contact you if you win.

  24. wendy - June 27, 2011

I *have*! Many many years ago, when the internet consisted only of mailing lists and bulletin boards. You know, back in the dark ages 😉 It was fun, and I’m still using some of the quilts that came from those swaps.

  37. Amanda - June 27, 2011

  61. Krista - June 27, 2011

I’ve never participated in an online bee….has potential, but seems like it would lack the social aspect of a face to face bee. I JUST bought this book and am looking forward to diving in. I have long desired to organize my own quilting bee. So many things of old are just a shame to have disappear!

  62. erin - June 27, 2011

Last summer I participated in several online bees. It was a blast! Too bad I don’t have time to do it again this year.

  94. VickiT - June 27, 2011

No, I’ve never participated in an online quilting bee. I’m still new enough to quilting that I’m learning and aside from not really knowing exactly how a quilting bee even works, I’m not feeling as though my work would be something anyone would be too thrilled receiving. Until I feel more secure I don’t think I would because I am a huge perfectioninst. I wonder if anyone has ever considered an online quilting bee geared toward only those who are new just to give them an idea how a bee actually works.

  95. Alli - June 27, 2011

I haven’t participated in a bee yet, but I’d like to join the Do Good Stitches one someday… I’m waiting to see if I have enough time to be a good participant once I’m off maternity leave. >_<

I made it about halfway through. I just did a wall hanging as part of a group and posted on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/61929493@N03/5864572919/in/pool-1669594@N21 Might have to be a member to see it. 131. Leigh - June 27, 2011

I have not participated in an online quilting bee, yet! Thank-you for the opportunity to win a book OR fabric!!

  132. Kate F. - June 27, 2011

I have never been in a bee, but I would love to! I am currently working on a pair of quilts with my sister that is kind of bee-like. I’m making light blue and green blocks; she’s making light blue and dark blue. When we’re done, we’ll swap some of our blocks to make coordinating quilts with all three colors. We picked out our light blues together, but neither one of us has seen the other’s dark color fabric picks. Even though we’re working from the same pattern, the secret fabric selections gives this swap a little bit of bee mystery.

  133. Sheila - June 27, 2011

I have not participated in an online quilting bee. But I have made and sent blocks for an online group quilt. Thanks for the chance to win.

Thanks for sharing!

  221. Katie - July 2, 2011

What a great new book! I began teaching a quilting class last year to a group of extremely creative women who just happened to not have sat down at a sewing machine before. They have come a long ways this year, yet sometimes their creativity is one jump ahead of their skills so we are always ready to undertake new challenges and sew outside the box. I`ve never been part of a quilting bee, online or otherwise, but what a fun idea! It`d be a great way to keep my students creating between class projects. Perhaps I will encounter one of you in a later online bee. Happy quilting to all!

  222. Shirlu Kelly - July 3, 2011
