I thought it would be really fun to give you a ‘behind the scenes’ peek to show you just how much fun it is working here at Connecting Threads. As you know I am a Fabric Designer, but I’m also the Art Director for our photo shoots for the catalog and web images. I develop the theme of the shoots, plan the locations, gather props and direct our photography department on angles and desired results. Our photographers are awesome! I work closely with Sarah & Amy, and we three work hard at creating really beautiful images for you to see!
But…things aren’t always as they seem. There is a lot of work done in advance to make sure our collections and kits are available to you in time to sew for the coming holiday or season. For example, Christmas collections are started around the beginning of a calendar year, so that samples and kits are ready and completed in time to photograph them. Christmas shoots generally happen around June and July. Obviously, the weather and outside conditions aren’t always as we’d like them or need them to be. As you can imagine, we have to be very creative in setting the mood.
Such was the case with Maple Skies. This is a fall collection that was shot in May. In order to get that Autumn feeling, we had to take some pretty drastic steps. One of the best things about fall is the beautiful changing of the leaves and multi colored flora and fauna. But alas, in May these elements don’t exist. So, I helped out by being a prop for a shot. Yes, you read that right. I became a prop; a tree branch to be exact.
This was a really fun photo shoot, and we sure did a lot of laughing that day!
