I used to be afraid of applique because the first time I tried it, I didn’t know the right tools to help me along the way; I was making a starfish pincushion with appliqued leaves on it; my poor little leaves were so frayed and my stitches were all over the place! If only I had The Quilter’s Applique Workshop by Kevin Kosbab back then to ease my fears…lol.

Since I recently acquired a loaner sewing machine, I figured no better way to test it out than with a quick and easy project that will yield a beautiful product as well as fulfilling my need to hear the purr of a sewing machine once again. I might have a slight addiction to bags. And by might I mean my husband would say I definitely do. So nautrally, I thought I needed another one made out of our beautiful Golden Age fabrics. I hopped on over to our bag pattern downloads page and started envisioning each pattern with some of the lovely vintage-inspired golds and browns that Golden Age has to offer.

The focal print in Golden Age, “Old Hollywood” is such a striking print and an unusual one, compositionally speaking.  I love it!  I think it’s so pretty and so interesting!  Knowing that this print would be a bit more challenging to work with, I knew instantly I wanted to showcase it by creating a decorative accent pillow.  I also knew I wanted to incorporate embroidery to give it a more three dimensional effect.

Adventures in Hand Sewing

During my quest to find a non-sewing machine related project, I ventured into the world of hand piecing. I rifled through my stack of books for just the right project. I came across the Amuse-Bouche pillow in 25 Patchwork Quilt Blocks by Katy Jones. While I love the bright and fun colors that she uses throughout her book (it’s one of the things that sucked me in, in fact!), I decided to do a much more neutral palette. I used a combination of Neutral Love II and Golden AgeGolden Age has some of my absolute favorite prints! And Neutral Love II contains fabrics that coordinate really well with Golden Age (and many others as well).

When we received the samples for our Neutral Love II collection I knew right away I had to have one if not several things made out of it. When I was reviewing the book Vintage Quilt Revival I thought exactly the same thing so I thought why not put them together and see what comes of it. Somebody did that with peanut butter and chocolate and look at how much better the world is now!

A Runaway Runner

I call this my runaway runner because it’s been hiding from me for about three years. Poor orphan that I’ve neglected. When Christmas was over I decided to begin spring cleaning and the first place I started was my bedroom closet. The most “stuff” that was pulled out of there was quilting related. Can any of you relate? My lovely runner was so far along in completing, I chose it first. The runner was completely sewn and already adhered to the batting and backing with 505 Spray & Fix. I love that stuff! No pins of any kind, no baste stitching, just 505!

Introducing Neutral Love II

During my time here, I’ve learned many essential tips to what it means to be a quilter and what are major necessities when quilting.  A quilter’s stash is especially important!  After seeking advice from my coworkers who are avid quilters, it seemed like a great idea to create a collection that would be a stash building collection.  So I first created Neutral Love, with the intention of it being solely neutral colored prints; blacksbrownsgreystanscreams, etc.  Neutral Love was a great hit by our customers, so it was a no brainer to bring it back.  Or at least bring the concept back…so Neutral Love II was created!
