Pillow Challenge: My Monster Pillow

Once Sue announced the Pillow Challenge, I instantly gravitated towards the idea of doing a Christmas pillow, but figured that was too easy and probably a little bit predictable. Since this was supposed to be a challenge, I wanted to do just that. I challenged myself to come up with my own pattern for a monster pillow. I played around with some ideas and started sketching a few of them out. Once I had some ideas together, I began thinking about how I would construct it. At this point I had to scratch some of my ideas as I couldn’t wrap my head around how to get them beyond an idea on paper! To start, I have a confession. I did a project without using Connecting Threads fabric. Eek! But it is our thread, so I hope you’ll let it slide.

This gifty galore project came about a bit backwards. It began when I fell in love with this fabric. I love Christmas as well as mid-century style illustration (e.g. Mary Blair). This fabric was the best of both worlds, so I bought it with no idea what to do with it. I did a google search with the name of the fabric to see if I could find anyone else’s projects using it. Lo and behold, I found Gwenny Penny’s Fussy-Cut Quilted Coasters. A nice and simple project that utilized the focal fabric perfectly. And as an added bonus, the pattern is free and she even walks you through step-by-step (always nice for a beginner!).

It is time for Week 6 of our Connecting Threads 12 Weeks of Christmas celebration. That means we are halfway to the holidays, hopefully with some fun gifts already made! For my contribution this week, the Timeless Tote, I updated the appliqué on a tote bag from CT‘s past. I wanted a design, part traditional and part whimsical, to accompany our lovely Lasting Legacies collection.
